What Is Production Management in Events?
What is Production Management in events? Seems like an easy question to answer, but....
We exist in an industry with a wide variety of vocabulary, titles and technics with out one single source for "how" to produce events and what titles to give each team member. Some agencies use theatre industry language, and others leverage vocabulary from the television world.
This is why talking about Production Management, for example, is a little tricky, but oh so important to a high quality show.
PM services is a huge part of our formula and why so many large corporations with high stakes events choose us. In this blog, we're pulling back the proverbial curtain on our view of Production Management, why we integrate it into most of our client events, and the incredible partners we work with who bring their decades of complex Production Management experience to our projects.
So, what is Production Management?
Our go-to Production Managers, Dominic Manca of Production Canada says, PMs exist as part of an event management team reporting into the Executive Director of the event, which is often our owner, Lisa Marks. The PM gives the ED the opportunity and freedom to dream big, and to focus on strategy and client discussions as versus logistics. PMs do the heavy thinking and heavy lifting related to creative planning with technical accuracy.
Skilled Event Producers or Directors work hand in hand with their PM, talking out event strategy and creative, and flagging the logistical or technical challenges and budget considerations in advance of pitching concepts to a client.
PM's put much of their focus on logistics (the "how") to execute an event or creative idea, enabling the producer to focus on strategy, overall creative, and supporting their clients.
What does Logistical Focus mean? Building a thorough technical plan (regardless of scale of the event) to ensure smooth execution and to also ensure the technical elements serve the event and not the other way around.
This kind of focus leads to a seamless execution plan for all event partners at the table, thus getting more bang for the clients' bucks and leading to an overall positive experience from strategy to prep through to onsite execution and strike.
We at Brand Alive provide Production Management services as part of our overall offering, enabling us to work on challenging, unique and high-stakes events with little to no room for error.
